Straight off the website: Any Instrument Policy Proposed by: Kathy Black, DCI Board of Directors Summary: This proposal would allow the use of any instrument, including woodwinds, effective for the 2021 season. On the record: “Opening the drum corps activity to young musicians currently excluded is consistent with the DCI mission to bring the life-enriching benefits and enjoyment of marching music performing arts to more people worldwide.” THOUGHTS??? |

I can’t imagine it not passing, since apparently every other type of instrument is already allowed. |

But unless they increase the max # of performers allowed I can't see woodwinds making much of an impact except for an occasional solo or maybe a small ensemble. Still, the very thought is.......well, in this day and time nothing surprises me anymore. ![]() |

I would think it would just be for solos. I can’t imagine them actually marching a whole woodwind section, unless it’s just for a short gimmick, kind of the way they use trombones. Has any corps ever marched a whole trombone section for an entire show? I wonder. |

I would imagine, at least to begin with, they would require any woodwind players to also be able to play another instrument, sing, or maybe even come from the guard, because I just can’t see them using woodwinds for the whole show, especially a section marching on the field the whole time. But I guess we will see how it all plays out. |

All I know is that when I marched we would have been chastised if we even uttered the word "Band" during rehearsal or on tour, much less mention an instrument that was not percussion or brass related. |

Ah yes, the grumpster! We didn’t like saying band either. I wonder if they’re still like that, or if they can see the irony of the situation now. |

Definitely! And since I’ve already achieved grumpy old man status, I might as well embrace it and wish that somebody with a lot of money would start a new drum corps organization, which will not imitate DCI the way DCA does, and will keep everything acoustic, bring back the Gs, get rid of tired old predictable body movement, and basically look and sound like 80s and 90s drum corps, which I never got tired of and never thought had to evolve, which it never did anyway in my opinion. More like devolve! |
